A New Chapter

Well Everyone, it’s officially official. It’s been over 8 years since I first opened StyleLab Seattle and it’s time to start a new chapter. I love helping people feel better about themselves through personal appearance but I have longed to work on a deeper level to help people feel good inside and out.

I recently graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and am now working full-time in my health coaching practice while simultaneously pursuing my NASM personal training and Metabolic Effect Nutrition Specialist certifications.  I have always been passionate about natural health and I am super excited to make this transition into health & fitness. My current clients are taking charge of their health, seeing great results and feeling amazing!

I will still post here occasionally and will be available to my existing StyleLab clients but will no longer be taking on any new clients. If you would like a referral, please message me and I’ll be happy to make a recommendation. Check out my Jeannie Oliver Wellness web site and if you or anyone you know could benefit from nutrition and health counseling, shoot me an email and we’ll schedule your free consult. And hey, once we work together and you need new clothes to fit your healthy, gorgeous body, maybe we’ll go shopping together! 🙂

Moda & Estilo’s Venice Is Sinking Editorial

When I style photo shoots I spend my time behind the camera, or at least out of it’s way. But this time I had the pleasure of being in front of the lens for Moda & Estilo‘s editorial shoot to promote Venice Is Sinking: A Venetian Masked Carnival Ball.

Venice Is Sinking is the most unique and fabulous party in Seattle and is produced by the unstoppable Tracy Klinkroth of ChickChat. Proceeds from the party go to Crooked Trails, an educational non-profit organization helping people broaden their understanding of the impact of travel on the world’s cultures and ecosystems through educational outreach and sustainable travel programs. We also made an appearance on New Day NW to show off some inspirational looks before the ball. (Click the New Day link to view the clip).

It was so fun to wear the gorgeous gowns by Olga Szwed of La Belle Reve, Corban Harper and Isaiah Whitmore, and the beautiful masks from A Masquerade Costume pulled it all together. Thank you to Eric Rust Photography for being very patient with us “models” and for being a consummate professional from start to finish. The beautiful and very cool Shalika Martin and the handsome  and sweet Brayden Olson were my fellow models. It was a very long day but hanging out with these two made it fun.

Here are some of my favorite shots.

Favorite Red Carpet Looks at the 2012 Academy Awards

Here are my favorite looks from this years’ Academy Awards. Four of my favorite gowns were white which seemed to be the hottest shade on the red carpet tonight. Rooney Mara got mixed reviews on her white Givenchy gown, but I absolutely adored it! It was edgy, but feminine and a refreshing departure from her usual black. Giuliana Rancic looked incredible in an intricately embroidered stunner by Tony Ward and Gwyneth Paltrow rocked a sophisticated white gown and cape by Tom Ford.  Viola Davis was stunning in bright emerald green and though I’m not usually a fan of Vera Wang, I thought this gown was fabulous on her and the color was delicious.

As for the men, it’s hard to look bad in a classic tuxedo but there are always a few gents who manage to raise the bar. Christian Bale, Jean Dujardin, Tom Hanks and Gary Oldman (who’s wife Alexandra Edenborough also looked amazing) were some of my favorites.

Fashion’s Night Out at The Shops at the Bravern

Fashion’s Night Out was a big hit at The Bravern this year. There was a great turnout and the vibe was fun and energetic. Myself and four other local stylists were paired with local personalities and/or community figures to style for the night’s festivities. It was my honor and pleasure to work with Lorna Kneeland, Executive Director of PONCHO.

With Lorna Kneeland

Since Lorna attends events nearly every night of the week, she is always in cocktail dresses. My goal was to put her in something that she might not normally wear and to find versatile pieces for her that would compliment her existing wardrobe. Lorna has a great sense of style, loves color and was open to new ideas, so she was great to work with. We chose an emerald green Diane von Furstenburg “Whitman” blouse from Neiman Marcus and a Galliano skirt from David Lawrence. Finishing off the look were the Yves Saint Laurent “Tribute” Sandal from Neiman’s, Rebecca Minkoff Clutch from DNA and a Marni necklace, also from Neiman’s. I wore a Helmut Lang skirt, Leith top, Christian Louboutin heels, Urban Outfitters cuff and a BCBG necklace.

With the other stylists. From left: Kim Crumpler of Uniquely Savvy, Darcy Camden of Styled Seattle, Myself and Stacy Zimmerman of SZ Styling

Each of us revealed our girls’ looks at the Neiman Marcus fashion show, then sat down to watch the gorgeous fall looks that went down the runway. The house was packed and it was a great show. My favorite trends for the season are hats (looooove them!), saturated jewel tones and leather which adds a little edge to the otherwise ladylike silhouettes. Fur is huge this season and while I love the look of it, I prefer animal friendly faux fur. Rachel Zoe does a great job with her faux fur pieces like the vest shown below.

Thank you to Joe at David Lawrence, Natalie at DNA and Nate, Rena, Galina and Rachel at Neiman Marcus for taking such good care of us during our shopping spree! A huge thank you to Colleen Moffitt and Holly Zuluaga of Communique PR for selecting me to participate in this great event and to Tami Elwin, The Bravern Blogger for documenting it all. I had a great time working with everyone and am thankful for such a fabulous opportunity. Thanks also to my faithful fashion event date, jewelry designer Shamila Jiwa. We may look a little like Penn and Teller together, but we always have a great time!

The Real Grand Wedding Production

I had the pleasure of styling the “wedding party” for A Grand Wedding.com’s “A Real Grand Wedding” production held at the Georgetown Studios. This faux wedding event showcased lots of fabulous local wedding vendors each offering services under $1000.00, and it was a gorgeous affair!

The “bride” and “maid of honor” wore gowns from La Belle Reve in Bellevue, and they looked smashing if I do say so myself :-). Olga at La Belle Reve is such a pleasure to work with and she stocks the most beautiful and unique gowns. The bride’s Watters gown is also featured in Seattle Met Bride & Groom’s new winter issue feature, “Hitched to a Dream”. The bride wore jewelry from Banana Republic and the maid of honors’ jewelry and sash were from J. Crew. Wedding rings were provided by Diamond Wave. We didn’t get to pick these out, but for $1000 each, they were awfully pretty!  Swink Style Bar took care of our girls hair and makeup and did a beautiful job.

Our dapper “groom” and “best man” wore tuxedos compliments of Wall Street Clothiers on Mercer Island. I have to say that we had such a great experience with Wall Street Clothiers. I am generally NOT a fan of rental tuxedos, but these guys really go out of their way to make sure that the suits fit and look like a million bucks. Avoid Men’s Wearhouse like the plague! If you’re looking to rent tuxes for your wedding or a formal event, go see Dale and tell him we sent you.

Fena Flowers did the incredible floral arrangements, bouquets and Boutonnières and I was absolutely blown away for what they can do for under $1000! Gorgeous. Sean Wheatley of Seattle Parties kept the fun vibe going all evening with great music and I speak from experience (he was our wedding DJ) when I say that Seattle Parties does an AWESOME job! To see all the amazing vendors who participated, click here.

Thank you to Georgie Hockett of AGrandWedding.com for all of her hard work on this event and for choosing us to style the wardrobe.

Shopping for Princess Ameera al-Taweel

Thank you to Heather, Katelyn and Meagan at the Four Seasons Hotel Seattle for calling on me to assist with personal shopping for Princess Amira al-Taweel of Saudi Arabia. Her Royal Highness was very gracious and fun and I enjoyed working with her. Her Royal Highness is not only charming, but has great taste and an eye for fashion, so naturally I liked her right away.

The Princess needed a few hard to find items and let me tell you, the last few days were quite the whirlwind! I felt a little like Andy from The Devil Wears Prada, but it was a great project and the Princess seemed pleased with everything I selected for her.

A special thank you to David and Joe at David Lawrence, Margo and TJ at Gucci, Ladan and Ray at Neiman Marcus, Jai and Cathy at Nordstrom, Kyle at Roadrunner Sports, Noah and Stephanie at Nike Town, Diesel, Super Jock n’ Jill and REI for being so helpful and patient! You were all amazing and make my job possible!

StyleLab featured on A Grand Wedding!

Check out the feature article, “What Not to Wear” at www.agrandwedding.com. A Grand Wedding is one of our favorite wedding resource web sites and I was honored to be inteviewed by it’s founder, Georgie Hockett. We talked about the do’s and don’ts of getting dressed and why hiring a stylist for your wedding can be such a great investment. Check it out here.

A Grand Wedding features wedding vendors all offering services under $1000. You’d be surprised and the amazing deals you can find here from some of the area’s best wedding vendors! They also have a fabulous “Buy, Borrow or Share” section where you can buy and sell wedding items, gowns or split the bill on wedding purchases. If you haven’t made this site one of your go-to wedding planning spots on the web, don’t wait any longer!

Venice Is Sinking fashion show by StyleLab

Emily backstage in H77

February 20 marked the third annual Venice Is Sinking masquerade ball held at the Georgetown Ballroom. Selling out every year, this party is a true feast for the senses and if you missed it this time make sure you put it at the top of your social calendar for 2011!

Joan in H77 corset and Ivan Grundahl skirt

We partnered with Synapse206 to put on this fun show and couldn’t have been happier with the results. Showcasing local and international emerging designers, Synapse206 carries the perfect combination of artistic yet wearable garments. They were a perfect fit for our show and we’d like to thank Tina Beuche and Kimberly Goldfarb from the bottom of our hearts for their help and for trusting us with so many gorgeous pieces and allowing us to invade Tina’s store during fittings.

The beautiful masks were provided by A Masquerade in Bellevue. Thank you to the owner Kyra and her team for always being so gracious and fun to work with. The exquisite jewelry was provided by Shamila Fine Jewelry. Shamila’s jewelry has an inexplicably addictive quality to it and the models had a hard time parting with their jewelry after the show.

Robin in Ivan Grundahl

I also want to thank my amazing associate stylist Jake Ferrigno for all of his hard work and dedication. He managed to somehow juggle mid-terms at the UW with prepping for the show and maintain composure through it all. Thank you to Darek Mazzone for the great music and to Jen Meyers of Acknowledge Entertainment for all her hard work at the event.

Rosie - in an Ivan Grundahl frock

The next big thank you goes to our unbelievably talented hair and makeup professionals who did such an incredible job of bringing our vision to life. Everyone at the event was blown away by the creativity and skill that these people brought to the show. Sarah Theckston of Set Salon, and Cheri Trainor and Lilli Matzke of Tru Salon & Spa worked their magic on the hair. Lilli, thank you for my gorgeous do as well. I loved it! Our fabulous makeup artists were Ashley Bachelder and Adrienne Arrieta (contact me if you’d like to reach either of these artists). Adrienne fit me in between models and transformed me from sleep-deprived show producer to glamorous and glowing in minutes.

And of course we could not have pulled this off without our gorgeous models and all the dressers who helped out behind the scenes. Our models were Allison McLauchlan, Brooke Weitz, Emily Passic, Joan Krause, Robin Campbell, Rosie Meyn and Summer Rae. Dressers were Jennifer Margolis, Chris King, Gyda Muschett, and Susan Trenery. These gals deserve a special thank for working so hard backstage and pulling off the show without any damage whatsoever to the garments! You were all wonderful, patient and so much fun and I am so grateful to have such fantastic people on my team!

In remembrance of Alexander McQueen 1969-2010

I was heartbroken to hear of the untimely death today of one of my favorite designers of all time, Alexander McQueen. The loss of his brilliance and creative presence will leave a gaping hole in the heart of the fashion community and there will never be anyone like him. Lee Alexander McQueen was one of the great talents of our lifetime and one of the worlds’ most respected designers. He laughed in the face of convention and managed to produce dark, yet beautiful collections that have forever changed how we think of fashion. His work and vision will continue to inspire and challenge us for generations to come.  Thank you Lee for all the beauty you’ve given us. We will miss you!

Styling my own wedding.

Wow, where to start?! The guys were easy – classic black suits which most of them already owned. We found 4 beautiful silver and ivory ties at Holt Renfrew in Vancouver which looked oh so elegant and tied in (no pun intended) perfectly with Christian’s suit. My girls were asked to pick their favorite black dress, all of which turned out to be adorable and flattering. The color of the flowers and the gorgeous outdoor setting prevented the black from looking drab. We found a cute ruffled white cotton dress at J. Crew for our flower girl Kayla and finished off the look with silver sequined mary janes and a silk hairpiece from Anthropologie.

Our darling flower girl Kayla

Christian and the guys

Three of my lovely ladies!

For my fiance’ we chose a classic three-piece dove grey suit with a subtle ivory pinstripe and a crimson red tie to match the black dahlias in our bouquets. We found him a gorgeous pair of grey dress shoes at Zara Man up in vancouver to finish off the look and he wore a pair of Formula One car cufflinks that I bought for him in Paris. Judge for yourself, but I thought he looked quite dashing!

All smiles after our ceremony

My gown was the “Lalique” by Matthew Christopher (available at Calla Bridal). I purchased it at a trunk show in Portland (before I knew Yachi at Calla Bridal) in hopes of saving on sales tax and taking advantage of the trunk show discount and free shoes the shop was throwing in. The sample fit me like a dream and I truly believe that the saleswoman measured me carelessly because I have seen Matthew Christopher gowns on other brides and they arrive fitting beautifully. In the end I spent all the money I had saved on alterations. So, the lesson learned here is buy locally from a shop and consultant you feel good about and make sure your measurements are accurate. If you try on a sample that fits perfectly, buy that sample or insist that they send you a gown cut from the same pattern and measurements as the sample. I went alone, was caught up in “the moment” and forgot to pay close attention, so if at all possible, bring an advocate with you! Ideally this person would be a stylist who knows what to look for and what questions to ask; but if that’s not an option, a friend or savvy relative (who won’t drive you crazy) is better than no one. Bridal shop consultants are less likely to cut corners if there’s a third person there breathing down their neck.

After searching unsuccessfully for the perfect hairpiece, I decided to make my own and was thrilled with the result. I think I have a new hobby. Etsy, here I come! The pale blue petals in the hairpiece were a perfect compliment to the vintage aquamarine pendant I wore. An heirloom from my great grandmother, it is my prized possession and the perfect choice for my “something blue”. I decided on simple diamond studs in order to keep my necklace the focal point, but chose a shape that matched the shape of the stone in the pendant. I was also lucky enough to fine a fabulous pair of ice blue stilettos by Betsey Johnson. They were super fun and actually quite comfy for 3.5 inch heels!

I decided to forego wearing a veil and instead took a few photos while wearing the Irish lace mantilla that my grandmother wore in her wedding in the 1930’s. It was a great way to incorporate the precious lace into my photos without wearing something that didn’t work with my gown.

All in all I was happy with how everyone looked even though my gown was far from what I hoped for or expected. Our wedding day was wonderful and we had such a great time! Thank you to all of our friends, family and wonderful vendors who worked so hard to make it special! And a special thank you to Alante Photography for our gorgeous photos!

StyleLab coordinates suit fitting for LA Galaxy!

Jake and I with David Beckham

The Thursday before the LA Galaxy’s visit to Seattle for the MLS Cup playoff I got a call: Could StyleLab help the team get 40 suits tailored by Sunday? For anyone who has ever had a suit fitted, you know what an enormous request this was. The team had been given 40 suits by Tommy Hilfiger to wear during their press conference and team photos on game day. However, the suits had not been shipped on time and the guys still needed them tailored by Sunday.

Luckily I knew who to call and the wonderful tailor shop at the downtown Nordstrom stepped up to the plate and came to my aid! The suits were originally due to arrive on Friday and we scheduled the fitting for that afternoon. However, the boxes didn’t arrive and it turned out that they weren’t going to be here until Saturday morning. That gave us less than 24 hours to get them all tailored and back to the hotel. Impossible right? Not when StyleLab is on the case!

Saturday morning I was told that the boxes weren’t guaranteed for arrival until noon, so I picked up the suits at FedEx in order to get them to the hotel asap. The entire team, coaches, managers, several tailors and Jake Ferrigno (my wonderful associate stylist) and I all descended upon the hotel banquet room for what might be one of the biggest suit fittings in history. Jake and I made sure that each player was given the right size jacket and pant (thank God for suit separates) and the tailors worked their magic. This took a little finessing because some of the guys needed different sizes from what was sent, but after lots of switching and swapping we got everyone into the right pant and jacket.

The ties arrived that afternoon, but the dress shirts never showed. So armed with a list of  the players suit sizes, heights and some of their neck measurements, I had to guess their sleeve lengths and pick out dress shirts for all of them. Thankfully Nordy’s had all the sizes we needed and from the feedback I received, there were no complaints about the sizing. Phew!

All of the guys were great to work with and what could have been a nightmare situation turned out to be a lot of fun. David Beckham was very down-to-earth and thanked us profusely for pulling it all together and you can see him wearing his suit in the latter half of this video on MLS Weekly – Episode 22-4.

Thank you to Mohammed and the whole team at the Nordstrom tailor shop for pulling off this feat. You guys were amazing! The team manager has promised to send us photos of the fitting so we’ll post those as soon as we receive them. We were very sad that the Galaxy didn’t win the game, but we congratulate them on a great season and wish them luck next year!

Finally a new post!!!

Hello Everyone,

The last few months have been consumed with wedding planning, but we’re finally hitched and back to normal life! The StyleLab blog has been extremely neglected, but we will soon have lots of new and fun stuff to post. Now that I’ve seen both sides of the wedding coin I have an even better perspective and more knowledge to offer my brides and grooms.

It’s one thing to style my clients’ wedding wardrobes and quite another to do it for my own wedding. The nature of my job means that I’m extremely picky and perfectionism + small budget = big challenge. It didn’t help That my gown arrived 5 weeks late and 2 sizes too big! A huge thank you to Rebecca at Calla Bridal who did extensive alterations and saved my dress!

Pictures of our wedding (by the wonderful Loren Callahan of Alante Photography) and shots of our summer 2009 clients are coming soon so check back often. Ciao for now!
